Eye Glasses and Contact Lenses Edison

glasses contacts Patel Eye Associates New JerseySometimes, our eyes just don’t work as they should. Eyeglasses and contact lenses are often the first line of defense in restoring clear, crisp vision. At Patel Eye Associates our Edison, New Jersey ophthalmologists in  offer a wide variety of eyeglass and contact lens options to treat many common and complex vision conditions.

Eyeglasses are the most common type of vision correction lenses designed to treat refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Eyeglasses work by adding or subtracting focusing lens power to the cornea and the natural lens of the eye. Lens power is measured in diopters, or the amount of power necessary for sharp focus.

Only a thorough eye examination by a skilled ophthalmologist can reveal your personal corrective prescription. Edison ophthalmologists Dr. Hitesh K. Patel and Dr. Himanshu S. Shah have served the vision needs of the community for more than six years. We welcome the opportunity to consult with you about eyeglasses and contact lenses for vision correction.

Types of Eyeglass Lenses

We offer the following types of lenses to correct the refractive errors in your vision:

  • Concave lenses: these are thinnest in the center and correct nearsightedness
  • Convex lenses: these are thickest in the center and correct farsightedness
  • Cylindrical lenses: these curve further in one direction and correct astigmatism

Types of Contact Lenses

Nearly twenty four million Americans wear contact lenses. Eighty percent of all contact lens wearers choose daily wear soft lenses.

Contact lens types include:

  • Soft, water-absorbing lens, called “soft contacts”
  • Rigid, gas-permeable lens, called “hard contacts”
  • For astigmatism, the new toric multifocal lens designs may reduce the need for limbal relaxing incisions to achieve your best vision

Other rigid lenses and flexible, non-water absorbing lenses, such as sclera lenses, Intacs or SynergEyes® hybrid contact lenses may be recommended by Dr. Patel and Dr. Shah for more complex eye conditions such as keratoconus , a progressive eye disease that can affect one or both eyes.

To determine your prescription for contact lenses, Dr. Patel and Dr. Shah will take special measurements related to the eye’s curvature. Considerations in choosing contact lenses are whether your eyes are too dry, and whether any corneal problems exist that may prevent you from wearing contact lenses comfortably and safely.

Dr. Patel and Dr. Shah may want to try trial lenses to ensure proper fit and comfort. Regardless of the contact lenses that are right for you, Patel Eye Associates offers a wider variety than many area ophthalmologists. We continually access the latest technology in lens design.
